APR Calculator
Convert a loan rate plus fees into APR. Fees reduce cash received, so APR is higher than the note rate.
APR solves for the rate that makes the present value of payments equal the amount you actually receive (principal − fees). Related: APY on savings is the opposite direction.
This APR calculator turns a note rate plus upfront fees into the annual percentage rate — the rate that actually prices the money once the fees are counted. Enter the amount borrowed, the fees deducted, the stated rate, and the term.
A $20,000 loan at 8.5% with $400 of fees does not cost 8.5%. You receive $19,600 but make payments sized for $20,000, so the effective rate is about 9.4%. Below: the formula, how APR differs from the interest rate, and where APR itself understates the cost.
How to calculate APR
- Net proceeds = amount − fees = 20,000 − 400 = $19,600.
- Payment is based on the full amount: 20,000 at 8.5% over 60 months = $410.30.
- APR is the rate r that discounts those 60 payments back to $19,600, not $20,000.
- Solving numerically gives r ≈ 0.0078 per month, or about 9.4% a year.
- The 0.9-point gap between 8.5% and 9.4% is the cost of the fee, spread across five years.
Example
Borrow $20,000 at 8.5% for five years with a $400 origination fee. The payment is $410.30, but only $19,600 reaches you, so the APR is about 9.4%. Double the fee to $800 and the APR rises to roughly 10.4% — ten basis points of rate for every $45 of fee at this size and term.
APR formula
Net proceeds = amount − fees. APR solves: net proceeds = M × (1 − (1+i)^−n) / i, where M is the payment computed at the note rate and i is the monthly APR.
How to use this calculator
- Enter the face amount of the loan, before any deductions.
- Add every upfront cost the lender charges: origination, documentation, underwriting, and any fee withheld from the proceeds.
- Type the note rate and the term in years.
- Compare the APR against other offers, not against the note rate — that is the only figure that puts fees on the same scale.
APR vs. interest rate
The interest rate prices the balance; APR prices the transaction. A loan with a low rate and a 4% fee can be more expensive than one with a higher rate and no fee, and APR is the only single number that shows it. The catch is that APR assumes you keep the loan to maturity.
What counts as a finance charge
Origination and underwriting fees, points, mortgage insurance, and some closing costs usually count. Late fees, appraisal fees paid to a third party, and optional insurance generally do not. Two lenders can compute APR slightly differently, so compare the disclosed APR on the same loan amount and term.
APR vs. APY
APR ignores intra-year compounding, APY includes it. A savings account quoting 5% APY pays less than 5% nominal; a loan quoting 8.5% APR charges exactly 8.5% only if there is no compounding within the year. For borrowing, APR is the comparable number; for saving, APY is.
Where APR understates the cost
Fees are assumed to be spread over the full term, so paying off early makes the real cost higher than the quoted APR. APR also ignores late fees, default rates, and any charge that is not classified as a finance charge. For a loan you intend to repay in two years, ask for the APR computed over that shorter horizon.
Common mistakes
- Comparing APRs across different loan amounts or terms. APR is only comparable on identical structures.
- Forgetting that a longer term lowers the payment but raises total interest — and can lower or raise APR depending on the fee.
- Treating APR as the rate you will pay if you refinance or repay early. It assumes full-term repayment.
FAQ
What is APR?
The annual percentage rate: the interest rate plus upfront fees, expressed as one yearly rate. It is designed to let you compare loans of different structures on a single number.
Why is APR higher than the interest rate?
Because fees are money you pay but never borrow. You make payments on the full amount while receiving less, so the effective rate rises. A 1% fee on a five-year loan adds roughly 0.4 points.
Does APR include closing costs?
Some of them. Origination, points, and mortgage insurance usually count; third-party appraisal and title fees usually do not. The finance charge disclosure lists exactly what is included.
What is a good APR?
It depends on the product and your credit. For unsecured personal loans, the prime rate plus a few points is competitive; credit cards commonly run 18–25%. Compare against offers you actually qualify for, not advertised teaser rates.
Does APR matter if I plan to pay off early?
Less than the fee structure does. If you repay in year two, upfront fees hurt more than the APR suggests, because they are amortized over the full term in the APR calculation.
What is the difference between APR and APY?
APR does not account for compounding within the year; APY does. APR is used for borrowing, APY for saving and investing.
Can APR be lower than the interest rate?
Only if the lender credits you money at closing — negative points or a rebate. That reduces the effective cost below the note rate. It is rare on consumer loans.
